Looking back at past years,age 12 to be exact, I , like most people get a kick out of pondering the lineage of my musical preferences. I find some value in returning to and revisiting so-called "Gateway" bands that turned me onto other things I might have missed out on. Bands that I dread to think that might not be such a deep part of my fabric today. The Culprit: Nirvana. Nirvana, they are what they are. You love them or you despise them. Either way, in the 7th grade, Nevermind was shooting to the top of the charts and it just caught me at the right time. There are more than a few catchy songs there and at the time my music collection was a couple of shoe boxes full of mix tapes my uncle Pete made for me. These tapes were chock full of '80's hair bands. Whitesnake, Quiet Riot, Cinderella, Guns and Roses, Def Leppard, Poison, and Van Halen all were represented. Other than these, I had a couple of AC/DC cassettes my dad gave me and Michael Jackson's "Thriller". Nirvana just opened me up to a slew of new shit. The Melvins, Sex Pistols, The Raincoats, Celtic Frost, Black Flag, The Germs, among other, were all names that Kurt Cobain and David Grohl would throw out in their interviews with Circus and Rolling Stone. Every penny I scrounged up would lure me down to the old Harlequin Records or Sound Barrier on a hunt for these new names. I'll always remember walking home from school after not eating my lunch at school for the past week so I could save the money and stop by the record store and buy The Melvins "Houdini". the one band that really caught my attention though was Sonic Youth. Watching 1991: The Year Punk Broke blew me away at that age. So I steadily started collecting every single piece of their history i could get my hands on. I kind of lost track of them after their album "Washing Machine" which I was never too fond of. But no matter, Daydream Nation and Bad Moon Rising were more than enough to make up for the direction they were heading in. Ahh, Bad Moon Rising, it's still my favorite to this day. One of my favorites' by any band really. It was this particular album that introduced me to a particular girl that I also have spent much time trailing throughout the years. That girl is Lydia Lunch. You know, I'm no historian when it comes to her. I have had an on again/off again infatuation with Lydia. On my time line of iconic crushes she fits somewhere after Samantha Fox,Ann and Nancy Wilson,and En Vogue and before Wendy O Williams, Rozz Williams ,and Amy Miret. I have collected her various albums ever since but by no means an impressive list. What I have I do love and as this is so, after putting it off for about a week, I'll get started throwing them out there.
Here is "Queen of Siam", which if I'm not mistaken is her first solo album after Teenage Jesus and the Jerks. It's amusing for what it's worth with a few great songs and a hilarious cover of Dusty Springfield's "Spooky" which is kind of out of place.

"Drowning in Limbo" is actually a reissue that combines two great albums on in one place, the soundtrack for "The Drowning of Lucy Hamilton" and one of my 2 favorites, "In Limbo". The Drowning... is a collaboration with China Berg of the band Mars, who'll pop up again in a bit. It 's dreary with a lot of droning clarinet.It's reminiscent of John Zorn I guess which is a good thing by my standards. In Limbo is performed with a more conventional band with Thurston Moore on bass and more John Zorn-ish horns squealing throughout. It's the sonic equivalent of a rainy Sunday afternoon. Check out the song "Some Boys", it's one of her best.

Next up is "Honey Moon in Red" which features the one and only Rowland S. Howard of the enigmatic "Birthday Party"(who will surely make a proper appearance here eventually). This one is the real prize of this lot. It is a more fleshed out,less stark version of In Limbo. while I love every last song on here, it cannot go unmentioned for the beauty lies in the sublime cover of the Lee Hazelwood and Nancy Sinatra duet, "Some Velvet Morning".
For the longest time I mistook R.S. Howard's voice to be Nick Cave's, but that is a tangent that will be left to itself for now. If you only download one of these album, make it this one.

One tangent I will embark on is this.Since I mentioned Lee Hazelwood and Nancy Sinatra duets, check out this version of "Sand" by Einsturzende Neubauten. It's a beauty.

The last of these is a collection I came across last week called "Hysterie". It's a retrospective that spans her involvement with Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, 8 Eyed Spy, Beirut Slump, and a few other odds and ends. Unfortunately, neither this compilation nor I delve too deeply into her works with "Clint Ruin" aka J.G. Thirwell of Foetus but I did choose to include their cover of B.O.C.'s "Don't Fear the Reaper for it's own sake. Maybe Stinkfist will end up here some other time?

the "No New York" compilation. The story goes like this: Brian Eno was in New York to produce the new Talking Heads album. He happened to be in the audience at a festival where a few of the New York's vaunted "No Wave" bands were playing and came away impressed with some of them, namely Mars, Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, D.N.A., and James Chance and the Contortions. He offered to produce songs for these four groups and long story short, No New York was born.

For the sake of giving y'all something to listen to today, Michael from Athens, Georgia sent me this awesome German compilation a few months back. It's called the Plot compilation and it contains a who's who of great German bands from the early '90's. There are Luzifer's Mob and Graue Zellen who some of you may know from the wonderful "Whispers" compilation that was put out by Profane Existence/Skuld back in the mid '90's. There also more well known Hardcore groups like Acme, Golgatha, Systral, and Zorn. And last but not least, one of my all time favorites, the unrivaled "Ambush". There a few mediocre offerings here but 95% of it definitely stood the test of time. Don't miss out....Troy

I'm sure most of you know John Doe from his well known band X and Flesheaters, as well as his modest acting career(besides Roadhouse that is). But still, I've been wondering how many of you have heard The Knitters. The Knitters are 3/4's of X(minus Billy Zoom) and they play what has been called "Cow Punk" though I like to think of it as their take on Roger Miller's style. That's not a bad thing to emulate anyways. These folks debuted with the great "Poor Little Critter on the Road" in 1985 which contained some original songs, a few covers, and some reworked X songs. This album is fucking classic. The songwriting is wonderful and the musicianship is as great as any X fan would expect. Some would argue that they were far better suited to work in this style though as a passionate lover of X's first 4 albums, I'm kind of on the fence on that one.. The Knitters took a while off but in 2005 put out their 2nd album entitled "The Modern Sounds of the Knitters". Unfortunately for us all, I don't have this one yet nor have I heard it. if someone sends it my way, I'll put it up here on the double.Anyway, take the one you can get......It's a beauty.

Poor Little Critter on the Road

This gal here is my partner in crime and Darrylynn's mom, Dianna Lee. Today is her 30th birthday. It's unbelievable to me to sit here and think to myself that we've known each other for almost 15 years but 15 years it has been. Dianna graduated with her degree in Psychology this past summer after 5 long grueling years. We've been to hell and back through those last 5 years but we're still standing. Dianna, besides being an awesome mom also dedicates her love and energy working with 6 other children at work. She also organizes for the Student Peace Alliance of Rutland County(S.P.A.R.C.) and her and I "Counter Recruit" at local high schools and hand out literature to "targets" of the military and tell them the other side of the story that they don't get from those bastards. She's tireless and everyone that knows her knows that she would bend over backwards for a complete stranger. Fuck, most of the arguing that we do is me getting on her case for doing too much when I think she's being taken advantage of. You know, she's been dragged through the shit more than a lot of people will ever know and she still puts a smile on her face for everybody. People should be more like Dianna, really.

Dianna loves the Knitters and the Knitters love her. So all of you out there, wish her a happy birthday when you get a second.............Troy

Before he made his presence known in Napalm Death, Fall of Because, and Godflesh, Justin Broadrick had a fruitful obsession with his Brian Eno and Throbbing Gristle records. Man, it's been a dreary couple of days up here in Vermont. Final is my soundtrack to a good session of gazing out the window and watching the rain splatter the road. Every year, I just know when it's time to dig out the album One and let it take over.

Final, for years, was something that just seeped through the cracks of all the Godflesh albums and the plethora of other J.K. Broadrick side projects that have been born throughout the years. Thanks to Neurot Recordings and most notably Steve Von Till, Final has bloomed into a more regular sort of twin to Jesu. I haven't heard any Final albums besides One and Solaris, so if anyone wants to trade, I have a ton of stuff uploaded and I'd be glad to help you out too.

Welcome back and my apologies for the delay.This was originally supposed to be part of the Skaven post but I had not heard back from these guys with the go ahead to put this stuff up. I never did hear anything but since I already uploaded it, here it is.
Stormcrow are an active Oakland Stenchcore/Crust band. They have a style that is similar but a little bit more straight forward than Skaven. They rock just the same, it's just that their singer lacks the eccentricities that Zeb was known for. I learned of these guys on the Life is Abuse page awhile back. After seeing that Nate from Destroy, Brain Oil, Squalor, Silenced, among others, was involved,I was definitely intrigued. I haven't heard a band that he was in that I didn't like.

In Viridis Mons Montis Abyssus has been around for around 2 months now, which isn't really too noteworthy when you line it up with some of the others out there. The reason I mention this is that despite my sparse posts the last week, I am starting to actually get the interaction I was hoping for. Unintentionally, the Noothgrush and Ahisma posts actually put me in touch with some folks I hadn't heard from in years, not to mention a ton of other new allies. It hasn't had quite the local bend I had envisioned but I do know of a good amount of VT readers,the bands will make it up eventually. So this is a thank you to everyone that linked me up and to those who have sent me music or have just given me the go ahead to share their stuff. Tino, Steve, Will, Aesop, Chiyo, Shelley, Tony, Zeb, and anyone else that is slipping my mind......Thank you!!!!

Speaking of Tony, he is one of two bassists in Pennsylvania's Mancruel. They are a three piece and they play fuzzed out lo-fi groove filled shit. They obviously love Man is the Bastard, Neanderthal, and Black Sabbath. They kind of remind me of some of Siege's slower parts too. The recording sounds like it was made on a 4 track and that is perfect for these songs. These songs are form a split tape with Malaysia's SMG.

The scene was Oakland,mid nineties, an era I admittedly knew absolutely nothing about. I was just a 15 year old twerp in good old isolated Vermont and the closest thing to Crust I had heard were the first couple of Sepultura albums. Back then I would of thought Amebix was something I ignored in Biology class. I had no idea that on the other side of the country, Skaven was alive. It wasn't until I was at a show at the Lafayette Center in L.A. and I bought their 7inch from Reggie Rosales that I discovered them. I brought the record home, put it on, and immediately stopped. The sample seemed a bit out of place but the instrumental at the beginning was one of the most epic passages I've ever heard. The term "Stenchcore" gets used as a lot these days and there are a slew of great bands that have really carried the tradition spawned in the early eighties, some memorable, other's not so much. Skaven just stands out more than the rest to me. Zeb's lyrics are more Nietzsche than "Cal" Morris, they reek of Lovecraft or Camus rather than Penny Rimbaud. For all the bands who get dubbed with the honor of being called "Apocalyptic", Skaven is one of the few that really feels that way. There are no forced, cliche-sounding growls here. Zeb comes across on these songs sounding like the fucking Omega man, telling his stories to the ground. The dual bassists, Shane and Mick work perfectly serving their own function and Geoff Evans, well he's just Geoff Evans(Asunder, his current band, will make an appearance here soon.) Some would call this blasphemy,and believe me I do love these bands, I would choose Skaven over Axegrinder or Hellbastard any day. My only reservation saying this is the relatively small discography Skaven treats us to. Beyond the 7inch I mentioned earlier, there is the split LP with Dystopia and the split with Stormcrow. I contacted Zeb and asked for his blessing and he said it would be alright to put a few things up. So I'll put the EP's up because they are my favorite. There should be a discography CD out in the future and I hear they recorded a demo but I'm not sure about either. You can a read a review of their split with Stormcrow here.

Zeb lives in Montana and plays in a great new band called Demonsteed. They have an album out called Nitro Ground Shaker which I 'll post once I get a copy. They kind of remind me of Tony Iommi obsessively reading a Cormac McCarthy book??? Sounds about right!! Geoff Evans plays in Asunder and the rest of the guys, I have no idea where they are or what they are doing? I 'll let Skaven lie now with this alternate version of the song "The Swarm" .

Big Problem Does Not Equal The Solution. The Solution=Let It Be

Now there is an ambiguous name for an album if ever there was one.I bet most of you didn't realize Crispin"Hellion"Glover ever put out a record. I sure as hell didn't until I noticed on my friend Matt's shelf last Friday night. Say what you want about the mans acting skills, but River's Edge is a classic and that movie probably sucks with anybody else filling that role.
Big Problem Does Not Equal The Solution.The Solution=Let It Be is a mish mash of readings from a few of Crispin's many books, a Charles Manson cover, a Lee Hazelwood cover, and a couple other surprises. Perhaps the most entertaining aspect of the whole package lies in the interactive attempt that's made with the back cover art. an excerpt from Crispin's Wikipedia page explains:
"The back cover of the album is a collage of figures relating to each track on the album, with a puzzle: "All words and lyrics point to THE BIG PROBLEM. The solution lay within the title; LET IT BE. Crispin Hellion Glover wants to know what you think these nine things all have in common." He included his home phone number with copies of the album, encouraging listeners to phone when they had "solved" his puzzle. Glover later commented that he was surprised how many people figured it out."
And almost as weird for the solitary fact that Slayer and the Wipers share the same stage for the soundtrack, I thought it would be a wonderful idea to include the music from River's Edge.

The movie, although ultimately fictitious,is loosely based on the murder of 14 year old girl Marcy Conrad. Marcy was strangled by Anthony Jacques Broussard in Milpitas, California on November 13th, 1981. It seems the 16 year old kid was a bit twisted and had made several attempts at his mother's life prior. The parallel lies in the fact that in both the movie and actuality, the killer shows the body to his friends who respond with callousness. In both cases, while killer's close friends help conceal the body and show genuine interest in their friends' deteriorating innocence, they at the same time went and boasted to others and treated the corpse like a museum. I don't really know why I went so far into this, so while I'm drawing a blank, just go ahead and check out the soundtrack:

The Return..............

Hell everyone, It was only 2 days but it felt way too long. I have 4 days off in a row from work and I just spent the last 2 being a lazy asshole and chilling with Darrylynn. Not a bad thing because I did get to watch a bunch of movies I was meaning to as well as rekindle my love for some old favorites, I'm just ready to go on a roll. I added some more blogs to the links down on the right. Down Underground, Only In It For The Music, Heinus Noise, Distort Truth Distort Minds, Thee Claw and last but certainly not least, the great Kill that Cat. And speaking of blogs, Cosmic Hearse has now been around for a whole year so if you don't regularly read it, now is your chance for a fresh start. Aesop posts everyday,barring a tour with one of his bands, and his selections are fucking wicked!!!!!
Anyway, now for the album I should have put up on Wednesday. "War and Wine" by Dukes of Nothing. The Dukes of Nothing are something of an all star band of a few great stoner/doom??? groups in England. You've got Doug Dalziel and Dean Berry from Iron Monkey, Stuart O'Hara from Acrimony, and Chris Turner from Orange Goblin.(who will make an appearance here soon enough) They have one album that I know of and here it is: a more pissed Motorhead???,definitely a good place to start. It reminds me a bit of the masterpiece "Coup De Grace" by the aforementioned Orange Goblin(stay tuned,it really is a hell of an album!!!!!)

Now, here's yesterday's post today......

I want to thank Will again for the Ahisma songs and for the bulletin he posted for me on Myspace. Ahisma has been downloaded more than anything else but Noothgrush and I've gotten a ton of email from kids I met in Eugene back in the day. All of the response was nice and I was very glad to hear from Shelley. Besides being a great mother of two wonderful kids, Shelley busted her ass and bent over backwards to do everything she could for the Fall Creek campaign. Whether she was in the forest or helping out everyone she could when they came back to town filthy and tired, she definitely was appreciated by many. I didn't really know her personally when I was there but I was around long enough to perceive her worth to the community. Everyone that I knew out in those trees spoke of her far beyond fondly.

Anyway, Shelley was very cool about sending mean old an Memento Mori album to post. I knew of Memento Mori from their split with Kylesa which has two great songs by them. I didn't really know much of them beyond that including the fact that they had the awesome Leila Abdul Rauf as a member. The Leila Abdul Rauf that plays in the sick Bay Area metal band Saros. I currently lack anything by Saros but as soon as I get it,I'll ask the band if I can put up a few songs off it for everyone to hear. Until then, enjoy this great album:

I mean have you guys ever watched Bubba Ho-Tep. Click on the name for the trailer, just do it!!!! I love the whole Evil Dead trilogy and if I can find the other 2 I will post them eventually. I'm sure most of you have seen these but by chance you haven't sit down and enjoy!!

Fuck God in the Face!!!!

Fuck God in the Face, man I always have loved that band name since I saw them play at their house in Eugene, Oregon in the summer of 2000. That summer was a blast and I experienced so much shit during that time, I could write a book . I had arrived in Eugene originally to attend an action camp at the Fall Creek tree sit campaign in the Willamette National Forest outside of Lowell (which is 15 or 20 miles outside of Eugene). They were teaching people to climb and needed some warm bodies that were willing to spend some time up in the giant Douglas Firs. I was in San Francisco at the annual Anarchist Book Fair and had no real plans so when this dude named Pan told me about Red Cloud Thunder and what was going on up there, I said why the fuck not. So i hitched up the coast on the gorgeous 1 interstate and ended up in Oregon. I'll get into the whole Fall Creek story at a later date because right now I want to write about the weekend of June 16th-18th that year. Eugene was in a weird state during those days. Just a year earlier, the infamous June 18th riots had gone on during a "Reclaim the Streets" celebration and there were a bunch of arrests, the most well known arrestee being a man I really admire who goes by the name of Rob Thaxton. The Police used this as an opportunity to harass every person they saw walking down the street in a fucking black hoody. Needless to say, with rumored FBI activity in the area, paranoia was definitely at an all time high in the Whitaker neighborhood.
So, in the spirit of resistance and solidarity, some brave souls went about organizing a sort of guerrilla festival of music and direct action. There were great workshops and movies and lots of destruction and general mayhem going on but the real fun was going on down under the Interstate 5 on ramp in Washington Jefferson park. Someone had scored a generator and with the show certainly not being permitted, the general consensus was that if the cops showed up, everyone was going to grab a piece of equipment and run for the van. Well, I can't remember how many bands showed up that first night but I can tell you the Eugene City Police Force showed up in their full riot gear ready to bust some heads. The one band I do remember was this three piece Grindcore band. They sounded wicked with the sound bouncing off the concrete of the overpass and a ton of Crusty Travelling Punks screaming and hollering during the whole thing. The cops were lined up along each side of the park with batons in hand just looking for any excuse they could find to charge down the hill and join in the ruckus. Funnily enough,for some reason, I don't remember any brutality, just a couple of them getting pissed when this kid Johnny Cat started playing a set of acoustic Rudimentary Peni songs. Apparently they didn't appreciate Nick Blinko's dementia or something?
Either way, back to that "Grindcore" band. For years I didn't know that bands name. I couldn't remember for the death of me whenever I told someone the long drawn out version of this story. Earlier this year I happened to get a copy of Profane Existence in the mail that had an interview with the kick ass Eugene based band Happy Bastards. The members of the band were talking about groups they had played with in the past. This kid Will just happened to spurt out the name Ahisma. Now in a bit of a tangent, I had heard years ago in a Tim Lewis movie
(more on him later), this great band that I hadn't heard before. so when I saw Tim at the Red Barn in Eugene one day, I asked him "hey Tim, who is that band in your movie" and he responded Ahisma. So I made a mental note of it and that song has been burned in my brain to this day. It's called "Sinners in the hands of an Angry God". Anyway, back to the present. I wrote to Happy Bastards and asked them to put me in touch with this Will kid. He wrote me back and turned out to be a pretty nice guy and offered to send me the songs when he got his computer in order. I wrote him back a couple months later and reminded him and he quickly sent me everything he had handy at the time which was their split with Fuck God in the Face, their "Grueling Terror" 7 inch and an unreleased full length. All of this shit is awesome so I figured I would share it with you today. It turns out that that band in the park was in fact the mighty Ahisma. One of life's' riddles finally solved.......

Will is in the studio with Wolves in the Throne Room right now but when he's finished I'm gonna ask him for some Fuck God in the Face for you to hear. He was also in a band called Human Certainty that I've heard good things about but I've never heard. Maybe he'll share that one too. I am talking to him about getting Wolves in the Throne Room to come play in little 'ol Vermont next spring when they tour. That would be fucking amazing so keep your fingers crossed!!!!!

I mentioned something earlier about a guy named Tim Lewis. I have no idea what he's up to these days but back then he made a couple of really great movies, "Pick Axe" and "Breaking the Spell". I just so happened to find them both on google video so if anyone has any free time, you should definitely check these out.

"Breaking the Spell" is a documentary type movie of the WTO protests in Seattle. It has interviews with a ton of the people that were there and is the best movie on the subject out there.

"Pick Axe" is a film about the Warner Creek fight to stop needless logging in their area. it was co produced with Tim Ream.

There you go....You can't fucking miss that one. Kind of slaps you right across the face from the get go. Wu Tang Clan came and went with a whimper and today you get what I wanted to post yesterday. Seriously, this stuff is the best thing I've heard in a while and they go by the G.I.S.M. inspired moniker Syphilitic Vaginas( if you don't know G.I.S.M., email me and I'll get you up to speed!!!). Syphilitic Vaginas pull together the best parts of my favorite Japanese bands. They combine the wickedness and oddity of G.I.S.M. with the speed and metal of Jurassic Jade. They exude the anthemic pounding of Crow and the bleeding noise saturated rage of Framtid. I hear the hypnotism of Zouo's "Final Agony" forcing its' way through quite often and that is to say the least. They are the perfect Frankenstein's Monster of Japanese Punk and Metal and that's without mentioning the hints of Iron Maiden, Tank,and Bathory they throw at you. And I challenge each and every one of you to tell me that you don't hear "Shout at the Devil" era Motley Crue when you listen to the song "In Devil Night". Go on,refute it!!! I could go off forever because I'm hyped as a motherfucker over this band right now. Really, they are the kind of band you hear and you feel like you should just burn your guitar, because you just aren't going to write riffs this good in such frequency. They are so fucking sick and the solos are just as fucking wicked!!!!!!
Rumor has it,I'm told, that they might not even be Japanese but I've found any information about them few and far between which actually is alright by me. The mystery just makes it sound that much better.
You've got to hear this!!! It's everything they've released so far so make sure you download both parts:35 songs in all.

Here it is, the first Rap/Hip Hop post on In Green Mountain Hell. It almost got pushed back because I got the Syphilitic Vaginas Discography CD today, but that will have to wait another day or two. The one and only Wu Tang Clan!!!! I've kind of lost touch with them because everything I've heard after 36 Chambers is pretty unexciting. GZA, RZA, Ghostface Killa, and a couple of others have had some decent solo ventures and I hear their latest isn't so bad, it's just that it was all kind of dull compared to the light that shines when I listen to this album. Their identity and persona's are what really interested me in the first place but while their portrayals of themselves was the backbone of what these guys were about, the music kind of went in the shitter when various members started getting major film roles. Who knows, maybe that is just a coincidence. I'll have to ask Ice Cube next time I see him.
Either way, this is one of my favorites and I'm sure there are a few of you that think these guys are a bunch of capitalist fuckers,and you're definitely right, just throw out your ethics or whatever and bob your head to some Wu Tang, and everything will be fine tonight.

Saturday, November 22nd, and we have the first substantial snowfall of the season. It's bitter outside but it's okay because I'm not looking to go anywhere today anyway. Since, I skipped out on posting yesterday, I'm gonna make it worth your while.

The world has seen quite a revival of Stenchcore type bands in the last 7 or 8 years. Everyone and their brother seems to be paying tribute to the old U.K. greats. Personally, I can't get enough of it. In the 80's you had Amebix, Deviated Instinct, Bolt Thrower, Sacrilege, Hell Bastard, and Axe Grinder, all of whom are worthy of the adoration. In the U.S. there was Nausea, Misery, and all of the less well known SoCal bands like Apocalypse,Glycine Max,and Confrontation, who are all under rated. A little later on you had the mighty Skaven. Then as the millenium turned, a whole new crop has popped up. Stormcrow, Sanctum, After the Bombs, Hellshock, Guided Cradle, and a ton of others are all kicking ass around the world and that list leaves out all the great groups coming from Japan.
Acrostix, Age, Zoe, S.D.S., and Effigy, off the top of my head, are some of the more well known Japanese acts playing this style and they all rule. Like I said, I'm always on the lookout for this kind of stuff and for the sole reason that I have collected more releases by them than the others mentioned, here are all of the ep's of Effigy. They don't write as well as Zoe, they aren't as fast as S.D.S., and they aren't as majestic as Age, there's just something about them that I dig.
I haven't gotten a hold of their split tape with Abigail yet but when I do, I'll put it up right away. Until then, this will hold you over:

It's Thursday and it seems like this week has really flown by for some reason. The weather has been bitter and I can't very well remember exactly what I've done with my week.
The Gummo soundtrack went over real well??? Only 1 person wanted to hear it? Really? Well if you haven't heard it yet, that's your loss I guess, you know where to find it if you change your mind.
Today I'm trying something a little different and I'm posting some ranting by one of mine and lots of other people's favorite deceased human beings, Charles Bukowski. No not the bassist from Black Flag, smart ass.
I mean the handsome devil you see right above.
Honestly, I could ramble and fawn on and on about the man but I can't really do justice, you're on your own in that regard.
Do yourself a favor and go to the nearest half way decent bookstore near you and nab as many of his books as they've got. I suggest you start with "Post Office" or "Women" if you're shooting for novels but his short stories and poetry, yes poetry, are great too. Remember kids, don't get caught.

Fuck it's cold out!!!! I ain't gonna hem and haw much about today's post,the Gummo soundtrack. If you have seen it, you're probably pretty polarized about the damn thing and if you haven't seen it, you should. The film is set in Xenia, Ohio, a real life town that was ravaged by a tornado back in 1974. It follows the exploits of two boys named Solomon and Tummer as they make their way around town. The only way I can describe the movie perhaps is by lazily calling it schizophrenic. If you like to watch rednecks wrestling chairs, some guy whoring out his sister who has down syndrome, and a sub plot of feral cat poaching,among other things left to your very own discovery, dig on in.
Besides all this bullshit, the movie is worth watching alone for the music interludes alone. The cast of bands featured is pure fucking sickness. I mean,come on, this soundtrack was my introduction to bands like: Bethlehem,Absu,Bathory,Mystifier, and EyeHateGod . It also has Sleep, Mortician, Burzum, Spazz, Electric Hellfire Club,Nifelheim, and Brujeria. Quite enough said..................................Troy

It's November 18th, around 9:30 am,and to borrow a line from an old childhood movie, it's colder than a witches' tittie outside. A perfect Vermont day to share some Finnish evil with you. Rippikoulu, Finnish for "Confirmation Class", were a punk band,I hear, once upon a time.By the time these recordings reared their heads, around '92 or '93, the only thing remotely punk about them was their Crusty looking logo. "Musta Seremonia",their 2nd demo, is part "funeral doom" not so different than their country mates Thergothon or Skepticism, mixed with some thrashy moments and a few mid paced riffs thrown in once in a while.
Back tracking a bit....around 2001, when I had decided to stick around Long Beach,CA for a while, people always were telling me to check out this record store in Downey, CA called "Dark Realm" that specialized in predominantly Black Metal and Death Metal. I took my time getting around to it and sure enough one morning woke up and decided I couldn't live without Bethlehem's "Dictius Te Necare" album. So off I went to the train towards Downey and made my way to Dark Realm. Now I have no idea if the place is still open but back then they had an amazing selection of demos to choose from, all cheaply priced. I, by total accident, picked up two gems that I still absolutely love today: Musta Seremonia and Thergothon's "Fhtagn Nagh Yog Sothoth" demo. While sometime soon, I will post everything I have by Thergothon, today I want you all to have these Rippikoulu demos.
Musta Seremonia is the one you all have to hear. On the other hand, Mutaation Aiheuttama Sisainen Mataneninem, while interesting to die hard fans, it probably won't come off as too charming to the rest of you.
So all you "Punks" that think you don't like metal but really have never given it a chance, today is the day to reconsider.

Today's guest In Green Mountain Hell is a bit of a mystery. First off, you don't really run into many people that have heard this band. Second, you meet even fewer who have heard of them,even the almighty and omniscient Google doesn't give you much to work with on this one. Personally, I ordered a tape by the Smartpils when I was 17 for the sole fact that I had heard that there was a relative Amebix connection going on. Turns out some of Amebix's former members were in Zygote with the Smartpils' bassist, Tim Crow(Who also was in the great band Bad Influence). That sounds about right to me?
Anyway, like I said, I was turned on to this band by chance but fell immediately in love with the songs on their most well known release,No Good No evil. It was arguably the best $2 bucks I've ever spent.
I searched in vain for years trying to get more stuff by them and I've heard they have another LP named "Open Mind Surgery" that was released on Bluurg records in the mid eighties, but I have come up empty every time. I was able to dig up a couple of demos, one from 1983 and another from the following year though any information on these has been beyond minimal and trying to find it has been pretty much a waste of time.
Smartpils are simply beautiful. There are two female vocalists,as far as I can tell, and their voices weave together in a most hypnotic way. Not to say that they aren't aggressive, they are just exactly what the music needs. The recording is one of my favorites from the time period and this is just one of those records that affects much more than your ears. I would change nothing about it.
So on top of wanting to share this with the unfortunate souls who haven't been introduced, this is certainly a selfish cry of my own for some light shone on this band. If anyone can hook me up with any recordings that aren't here or even some stories about the band, I will try like a fucker to return the favor your way. Southern California,late 1980's was the time,and Crust was on the rise. Bands like Apocalypse,Glycine Max,Confrontation,and A//Solution were all going strong and producing some of the best stuff around.Though they weren't quite as heralded as their U.K. counterparts like Hell Bastard,Deviated Instinct,and Bolt Thrower or even New York's Nausea,in my opinion, these bands carry the same air of desolation and impending doom while capturing what I imagine it felt like to live in Orange county in the late eighties. Hard to say though,as I regretfully missed out on one of my favorite era's of punk/hardcore. I was lucky enough to meet a few of the guys that were in these bands when I live in Long Beach years ago. I stayed at a house on Elm St. in Long Beach for 4 or 5 months and had the chance to pick the brains of Raygunn(Glycine Max,Scarred for Life,Dogma Mundista) and Todd(Confrontation,Dystopia,Mange) and both of them were very generous with their music collections. I spent hours and hours poring over their records, making tape after tape and discovering tons of stuff I still love today. Raygunn used to share tales with me of backyard shows where he used to play with A//Solution. I had an old Apocalypse demo that had some songs on the end that were faster and heavier than the rest and always just assumed they were the last things they had recorded before they split up. I never put 2 and 2 together but they were actually the Butterfly ep,one of the best records there is. They also recorded an album dubbed "Things to Come" that is a departure from the speed and fury of their ep. I actually like to think of it as the SoCal answer to Zygote's Wind of Knives Lp. So, from me to you,some of the best songs to come out of Orange County, I give you A//Solution................

I just got back from seeing the Hostiles in West Rutland and they were as fun as ever. They were forced to play on the stage and whoever did the sound couldn't manage to get it right despite thousands of dollars worth of equipment. Kind of a young crowd,and you never want to sit through a Christian band but they seemed to have fun and Steve knows how to get them all going with his cool white boy rapping. Good morning everyone. I trust Conga Fury kept some of you busy for a minute. Back after taking a day off, I cater to the rainy day all you New Englanders are facing. Here is a great listen for you to spend some time with......Noothgrush. Those of you who downloaded the radio show I posted are in the know now but if you missed that,you can get it here. After a day off,have some more great Japanese punk rock. Not really the Black denim clad variety like Crow,but much more intense and manic,Conga Fury are my new standard for thrash. Aggressive and discordant and just tuneful enough when they want to be,they are so tight that the chaos they produce really is uncanny.
Three quarters of the stuff I am posting here today,I got from this great blog I want to link for you.
It's called Stay Female Fronted and they post bands that contain at least one female member.You get your Black Metal bands with only a female singer. You get your all-female Brazilian hardcore bands,your Girl School knock offs and so much more. You also can pick up the other Ludicra albums I haven't posted,if you so choose.

From Tokyo hails Crow,maybe my favorite Japanese band sans Corrupted and Zeni Geva. Going strong for over 20 years now,they have released some of the best D-Beat crust punk you'll ever hear. I don't know much about them to tell you the truth save that they shared a drummer with the much more well known G.I.S.M. I contemplated posting only Japanese bands for the week but I knew better than to think I could go about it without neglecting bands that fully deserved to be recognized. On top of Crow,I was going to touch on The Comes,Gai,Confuse,Framtid,Lipcream,and that would leave out G.I.S.M., Coffins, Gallhammer, Corrupted,Muga,Conga Fury,etc. So, today you get 5 Crow records and some compilation tracks and for the near future you can expect a steady dose of Japanese bands littered throughout the rest of it. Sunday Morning Radio

Sunday is here and I've got a couple of treats for you today in the form of two very well recorded radio shows.
There are two very different bands but both are absolute legends and beloved by many. The first is Rorschach who might be my favorite hardcore band ever depending on what month you catch me. They are from New Jersey and during the nineties, every fucking hardcore band in the world wanted to sound like them. Check out this live recording from 1990 on WFMU.

The other band is the crushing doom band Noothgrush. Hailing from the bay area,these guys along with Japan's Corrupted were THE sludge bands you wanted to see. They wrote kick ass riffs and never compromised,they just rocked. Their recording was from 1996 and took place on WSZU in Palo Alto,California. The sound is absolutely devastating so if you like your punk slow as molasses, download this now.

As for studio albums by these bands,I have a couple things by Noothgrush I can post but I've lost my Rorschach discography cd along the way. If anyone has it and could get it to me somehow so I could share it here,well,that would be great. Rorschach has so many good songs not covered on this recording as it was taken before they wrote their 2nd Lp. Their first album was a classic but even though it pains me to say it,the 2nd blows it out of the water.

While we're on the subject of radio shows I wanted to turn you onto KMBT:Combat Music Radio. With shows by Joe Preston(Harvey Milk,Thrones,High on Fire,Melvins),Scott Kelly(Neurosis),and Ben Sizemore(Econochrist) among others, you know it fucking rocks. Seriously,you have to check out Joe Preston's show "F that S", it's the best on there. The guy has been involved with some of the best bands ever and this show is definitely on that level. Apparently,Aesop from Cosmic Hearse blog and the drummer for Ludicra and Agalloch will be getting his own show soon as he gets the time. I can't wait for that one.

By the way,one more thing before I call it quits until tomorrow. I by no means want to force any of this music down your throats but there were a couple things I have posted that either only one person downloaded or nobody bothered to at all. The first is the Ludicra album on the Cosmic Hearse post I did. You are seriously missing out if you don't back track and check this out. Ludicra are better than 99.9% of bands that are out there today and I could point you to a lot of people who would back that up,it's not just my personal preference. The other glaring thing was how NOBODY downloaded the TerroRhythm Vol.3 Japanese Hardcore compilation. This has four of Japans most raging bands on it so do yourself a big favor and head back and get it. I've put new links up so click on Ludicra or TerroRhythm to get this stuff without searching back to find it.

Can God Pull Teeth???????

It's Saturday morning and my weekend has officially begun. Today's post deals with something a bit different than anything I've uploaded so far. I give you a couple of Al Jourgenson's side projects. For those of you who are asking yourself who he is, Al is the mastermind between perhaps the most widely known Industrial band bar maybe Nine Inch Nails, the mighty Ministry. Now,I know that they haven't really put out anything worth a shit since the mid-nineties but there was a period between 1985 and around 1992-93 where Al Jourgenson had his hands in everything. Whether it was producing or Skinny Puppy's masterpiece "Rabies" or sending NIN on their way to stardom, he was everywhere and he involved himself with a ton of cool bands and musicians.

That's where Pailhead comes in. Along with Ministry alumni Bill Reiflin and Paul Barker and Naked Raygun's Eric Spicer, they teamed up with Ian Mackaye of Minor Threat to make a great ep called Trait. Though short, this record has some cool songs on it. Imagine a more punk rock Ministry with Ian singing. I really wore this one out as a teenager but recently reacquainted myself with it and still find it to be a good listen. Minor Threat fans should certainly check it out.

Equally notable and something I might just like better than Pailhead is Al Jourgenson's work with Jello Biafra,which goes by the name of Lard. Lard finds much more of the Ministry influence creeping in and Jello's voice does sometimes seem way out of place during the album,it's just that some of these songs will have you laughing out loud. If you listen to only one song the first time around,make it "Can God Pull Teeth". It's definitely my favorite on the album "The Last Temptation of Reid". I believe Lard released an album in the late nineties but haven't heard anything about them since.

Finally I give you,my favorite three Ministry albums just in case someone out there reading is into this kind of thing. I remember when I would meet older punks there would be no doubt that most of them had an open mind and would be into anything that was even a little out there. Now most of the punks I meet are into punk and nothing else. Some of the kids I looked up to most as a teenager loved Metal or Industrial music. Now if I dare mention a band like Skinny Puppy to someone,their nose goes up in the air quicker than shit. So like I said ,if your into it?????

Welcome to Men's Recovery Project. Consisting of Sam McPheeters and Neil Burke of Born Against and a slew of other members coming and going,these guys put out a ton of shit.
Building off the rotting skeleton of their old band,they created a mayhem that was barely recognizable as hardcore but was definitely some sick stuff,full of electronic impulses and random direction. Then there was their live show,mostly done in some kind of getup and always looking like it was a whole lot of....uhh?....fun?
Here are two of their albums. They put out so many records I have never really been able to keep track of it.

A Disclaimer: I'll apologize ahead of time to all MAC users for the WMA files on the 2 full length albums I am posting here. My converter's free trial ran out and I haven't had the chance to download a new one. I normally am very considerate of my choice of format so you'll have to bear with me here.The 2 7inches I post here are Mp3's and if anyone really wants the Lp's,email me and I'll send you a link after I have converted them.
As you can see from the flier to the right,today's post deals with Born Against. They were from NYC and were active from 1989 until 1993. The stalwarts were the infamous Sam McPheeters on vocals and Adam Nathanson as the steady guitarist. A revolving Rhythm section consisted of Neil Burke and Tonie Joy on bass,and Melissa Yorke and Brooks Headley on drums. McPheeters and Burke then went on to form the bizarre Men's Recovery Project. I'll post some stuff by them shortly but for now, bask in the greatness that is Born Against.
Spawned from a hardcore epoch that also produced legends like Rorschach,Nausea,and a bunch of others that frequented ABC No RIO,these guys have influenced countless bands and kids alike. they were one of NYC's finest and I wish I had their whole discography to share with you.

Cheers and thanks to Steve Hostile,bassist for The Hostiles and Cozi Come and good friend/ally of In Green Mountain Hell.
I have been reaching out to folks in different areas asking for show updates,but thus far I haven't heard from too many of you. I ask again for you all to help out because I don't have the time to fish them all out by myself.
So Steve,being the upright citizen he is, has informed me about 3 Hostiles shows on the horizon.
The first is this coming Saturday, Nov. 7th and it is a benefit for a 6 month old little boy named Blake that is battling Leukemia right now.
It starts at 5pm in Springfield,VT at the High School
and it costs $10. I know someone just groaned at the price but it is for a kid dying of a disease so don't be a bastard about it. There are 8 or 9 bands give or take a cancellation so it is definitely worth it.
The bands:The Hostiles,Danny Devita,Last Train Rollin',Lilum,Retro Stereo,The Intel,Modo forte,From Jupiter,and the most interesting sounding to me,Hammer Hands.
And if anyone is interested and has a ride,they can follow me out about 5 or 6 miles north of Springfield to my friend Matt Corliss's going away celebration. It's on his parents' land and it is sure to be a good time.
On November 15th,the Hostiles are playing at the West Rutland Town Hall. It is only $5 and it starts at 6pm sharp. The Bands:The Hostiles,Civil Insanity,'Til We Have Faces,Next Time We Talk,and Kevlar Tuxedo. And special guest Katherine Von Pisspants and her friend Jillian treating us to an acoustic performance,I can't wait to see that.
And the final of the three will be at Mill River High School. It starts at 6pm and is taking place on Dec. 13th. The bands as of now:The Hostiles,'til We Have Faces,Next Time We Talk and Sidewalk Chalk.
Some of you may already know this but Steve and I are writing some songs for a new band which I mentioned earlier,Cozi Come. We are still looking for a drummer but in the meantime we have some good stuff being churned out . We wrote a kick ass song last night that just needs a bit more arranging,kind of Born Against meets "Forward into Battle"era English Dogs. It's been fun and hopefully we can really get things going soon. I'm beat and I'm not long for the night. It's only 8:42 but it feels like 2am. So, I'll postpone today's post until tomorrow and give you a couple of things I uploaded that I haven't used and didn't really have plans for.
First is the Terro-Rhythm Vol.3 comp. It contains 4 great Japanese Hardcore/Punk bands with multiple songs by each. They are Conga Fury,Swarrrm,Life,and Protess. They really isn't a bad song on the whole compilation but "Think About Death" by Conga Fury is my favorite. The most raging song I've heard in a while.

I also put up the brand new album by Norway's Dark Throne. Dark Thrones and Black Flags continues on in their more Motorhead-ish direction they have been experimenting with on the last few albums they have. I half expected it to get weaker as the songs went on but it really didn't. It stays pretty consistent and I really recommend it for their old fans that have become disillusioned with them.

Here's another piece of history for you.History, kind of the way you might begin to assess or describe anything worth checking out in Glenn Danzig's span of output. I'll assume Samhain isn't news to anyone that found there way here. I am a Misfit's fan until the end and I can get into the first 31/2 Danzig albums,I even love some of them,but when I think of big Glenn, Samhain is what really gets me going. I love it all and my favorites are Initium and Unholy Passion.
Songs like Archangel and Hungry End just make me feel like an awkward little fuck of 16 years of age with the shittiest devil lock you've ever seen in your life. Those were the days.
So here are the two fore a mentioned albums,that's what you get because I can't find my copy of November Coming Fire and I never got around to buying that box set. So if anyone out there wants to burn or upload a copy of it,I got a ton of shit ready to trade,shoot me a message.

Saturday night,the wonderful month of October is no more and we now enter the descent towards another New England winter. I hope everyone that had the good sense to check out that Roky Erickson album yesterday is still getting a kick out of it.
Due to time restraints I only posted that one album but I originally had grandiose plans to post a ton of great shit and a few oddities to celebrate the times. So the next few days you'll get all the Halloween related sounds you can stomach,'til I run out. Some of the shit I found on the great blog Digital Meltdown, and the rest I had laying around. Take a second to visit D.M.,it's a great blog that I visit regularly,tons of rare stuff and it is just an invaluable resource. These kids bust their ass on it and it shows.
Today,you get a trio of great film scores. You all know these movies, probably the three most famous sequel happy horror films of the last 30 years, A Nightmare on Elm Street,Friday the 13th,and Halloween. There are a ton of them out there, the later ones suck somewhat,but I grew up on the earlier ones and though I now find them far from my idea of horror,I love the fucking things,especially the first 3 or 4 in each series.
I start with the score to A Nightmare on Elm St. by composer Charles Bernstein. Famous for this along with creating the soundtracks to such films as: Cujo,The Covenant,Sybil,Sadat and Freddy Vs. Jason, the first Nightmare on Elm St. is where it's at. The tracks on here are some great pummeling,hypnotic synth songs. For anyone that is a fan of this movie or at least saw it when they were young,these songs are ingrained in your head. Listening to it the other day was a lot of fun,these melodies have stuck with me through the years.

Second on the itinerary for the day deals with Friday the 13th. This is a compilation that someone painstakingly put together. It has bits and pieces of music and dialogue culled from the first eight movies in the lineage. Through out you get the classic tch,tch,tch,....hah,hah,hah rhythm that scared the shit out of us as kids. 21 songs here,and one hell of a listen!!!!!!

Lastly I give you one of the most memorable sounds there is. The eerie marching cacophony that is the Halloween theme. Brewed up by one of my absolute favorite's,Director/Composer John Carpenter. Now while Carpenter started doing the scores to his films most likely for monetary reasons,the man was fucking great at it either way. Along side this, he also did the music for all of his films except for a few,Escape From New York, being my the one I love the most. Halloween is great too, don't miss out.

This guys got more backing bands than Jonee Earthquake. The album I give you today is from his days with the Aliens.It's called The Evil One and I chose this one specifically because it has a good amount of his classics on there.

These guys kinda speak for themselves,no glamor or pompous shit attached. D.R.I. originally hailed from Houston,Texas made up of Kurt Brecht on vocals and his little brother Eric on drums joined by Spike Cassidy on guitar and Dennis(of Dennis's Problem fame)Johnson on Bass.
Though only Kurt and Spike rock on in the band today, these guys have been around since early'82 and still play today. They have released 7 full length Lp's to date though none later than 1995.
I post this for the kids that like there Punk Rock blazing fast and pissed. A lot of attention gets paid to bands like Municipal Waste and Bones Brigade and dutifully so,just remember these guys are one of the main reasons bands like that are at it today.

I have to start this off by noting that the Repulsion post is a couple posts down,I fucked up and that is where it will stay.......go get it.......
And now,another movie and quite a fucked up one at that. Some of you may already know the great Dario Argento, Legendary Italian director best known for his film "Suspiria". You might not know of his daughter Asia Argento or that she in addition to acting in Land of the Dead(remember the beauty that dueled the zombie towards the beginning?)among other things of lesser note in American culture. Apparently,due to her father's ambition, she didn't have much of a relationship with him. Either way,I think she inherited a fair share of talent from her old man.
"The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things" is her 2nd movie and it came out in 2004. It is based on a novel written under the name J.T. Leroy , a fictional character with an elaborate back story of drug use and other vagrant behavior,created by American writer Laura Albert and enacted publicly her sister in law Savannah Knoop.

Starring the lovely director herself along with Peter Fonda,Marilyn Manson,and the Sprouse twins,the male version of the Olsen sisters who have showed up in every Disney special of the 21st century. Weird......
All this aside, this is certainly no Suspiria but it is a great movie in its' own right. I watched it last,maybe 3 years ago and it is one of those movies I just haven't let go of. If anything it is memorable. Here it is,lifted from Youtube in 10 parts. Ignore the annoying intro to each part that the person who posted this added on, the movie is worth watching even with this crap thrown in........

From the now notorious city of Flint, Michigan come one of the greats, Repulsion. Starting out as the generically named "Genocide",playing covers of well known thrash metal bands,lineup changes plagued the band and after recording a demo or two,they called it quits in 1984. After briefly moving to Florida for a quick stint in the legendary death metal group Death, bassist/vocalist Scott Carlson and guitarist Matt Olivo migrated back to 'ol Michigan with the intent to reform Genocide. After recruiting local punk Dave"Grave" Hollingshead ,named for getting busted by police for digging up graves in a local cemetery, as their new drummer and picking up Aaron Freeman on the 2nd guitar, they recorded the super tight "Violent Death" demo.
Changing their name to Repulsion in 1986,they recorded what was meant to be their debut LP called "The Stench of Burning Death". This is where the band really started to come into their own with their apocalyptic and gruesome lyrics, ripping guitar riffs,and some of the most tight drumming there was at the time or since. Considered by many as one of the pioneers of grindcore,along with Napalm Death,
these guys just couldn't survive themselves and called it quits shortly after this demo came out.
In 1989,Bill Steer of Carcass fame released a posthumous collection named "Horrified" that consisted of some of the bands earlier recordings. Revived interest in the band led to a reunion followed by some more demos and the "Excruciation" single released by Relapse records. The band broke up again in 1993 and Scott Carlson went on to play in Cathedral for a bit while the rest of them went back to everyday life.
5 years ago Relapse reissued "Horrified" as a 2 Cd set: The LP on Disc 1 and all of their demos on Disc 2. Don't miss out on this,it's all here.......a perfect cross of Discharge and Celtic Frost sped up to a frenzy........this just rocks ,enough said.

They're not State of Alert,they're not Void,not Faith,Teen Idles,and they are certainly not Minor Threat,but for my 2 cents,Roadmap To Revolution by Bloody Mannequin Orchestra is THE album I would pick if I suddenly had to choose a keeper from the annals of early eighties D.C. punk rock,hypothetically speaking of course. Taped from a tape of another tape off yet another one,this record was the source of much joy and smiles for me and most of my good friends.
B.M.O. ,they just aren't worth describing here, you all just need to get this and see for yourselves. I gave a copy of this to Steve from The Hostiles a couple months back,ask him if it ain't one of the best things he's ever heard. Roadmap to Revolution is here.
Attention paid to this band in the internet is few and far between.Actually,before yesterday morning,all I had to give was that their drummer went on to play in Dag Nasty with Brian Baker from Minor Threat and that they played a gig with Einstürzende Neubauten and got all of their equipment destroyed in the process.

From the remains of Denmark's Amdi Peterson's Arme, come the infectious Gorilla Angreb. Dead themselves for just over a year now,they had a great run while it lasted. They played some very catchy melodic punk that isn't terribly far off from what X was doing in the early '80's, excluding the fact that everything is sung in Danish. Ahhh, a Danish X, not so far fetched when you hear it, some of you may actually prefer it after a couple listens. X wrote some classics but Gorilla Angreb were far from slouches,especially on their final Lp "Bedre Tider." I've included everything I've got by 'em here. I figured I wouldn't waste your time in asking for more when you get hooked on it.

No Music today.....so instead I give you Hayao Miyazaki's 2004 adaptation of Dianna Wynne Jone's book " Howl's Moving Castle". For those that don't know Hayao Miyazaki, he is a well known director of some amazing anime, my favorites being this,Princess Mononoke,Spirited Away,and Nausicaa, Valley of the Wind.
These being but 4 on a list of many successes for the man,as well as the founding of the great Studio Ghibli, I suggest that you take a minute or two to look into his long list of works, definitely an important factor in Japanese cinema.

Anyway,Darrylynn and I were watching this last night and I remembered that Youtube used to have a bunch of his movies uploaded in parts. Before they were taken down,they had all 4 that I mentioned above, all of them Disney's overdubbed adaptations,which are all done quite well if you ask me. I had meant to post Princess Mononoke first but I can't find it . The only one left is Howl's Moving Castle,which by no means is
a consolation. It's very good,the animation is beautiful,and the
story is on par with most any that I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. Here it is,in 12 parts.

I urge all you Black Flag and Husker Du fans to get off your ass and check out The Blasting Concept. This guy who calls himself Donut Duck has been steadily posting the SST catalog one by one. This is your chance to explore some of the bands on here that you surely have never heard of. Some of my favorites: Saint Vitus,Meat Puppets,Sylvia Juncosa,Paper Bag,and Lawndale.
I suggest you guys go for the compilations first.They are all great. The Dicks- "Kill from the Heart" is a classic as well. You can get there from here.

It seems that whoever normally flyers for 242 has been a fuckhead about it and Matt is expecting a shit turnout...................that is where you all come in. You know show's don't grow on trees in VT, not good ones anyway..................

The Cramps......A band that just don't need an introduction.Concocted in Lux Interior and Poison Ivy's pretty little heads before the instruments were even approached,this band was as raw as it gets.You might even find the band's picture next to the word style in your old Webster's dictionary. More bad ass than a billion growling Death Metal vocalists singing about the devil himself,it also doesn't hurt that Poison Ivy was about the sexiest guitarist alive,male or female. Disagree?????? Well,I will tell you that I've never heard a Cramps song I didn't like, cover or not. Anyways, all that aside I give you their first three original studio LP's. Smell of Female and Bad Music For Bad People are great but today I give you the real deal...........

Now while we're on the subject of "Coolness" and "Style", I'd like to take this opportunity to introduce those who don't know her to my 5 year old daughter, the abominable Darrylynn Corso Bessette.
The reason for this is that The Cramps are one of her absolute favorite bands . Now,I do my best not to force my musical preferences onto her and she does happen to be a wicked Hannah Montana fan,but overall she does have some damn good taste just like her daddy. A little bit of X, a dash of Devo , a listen of "Crocodile Rock" and last but not least Europe's "The Final Countdown". You parents out there know it could be much, much, worse. I remember when she was still in the womb thinking, "I 'll just throw on some Johnny Cash and Townes Van Zandt and that will be that. Yyyyeeeeaaaahhhh.........
Now I return to the Cramps/Darrylynn connection. It all started with the song Goo Goo Muck. We just happened to purchase a New Caledonian Crested Gecko as a pet and the thing needed a name. After 2 or 3 days of proposals that just didn't fit, Dianna blurted out the name Goo. Perfect!!! I proclaimed and that was that. About a week later, I was listening to The Cramps and the song came on and Darrylynn,the bright little light bulb she is, picked up on this synchronicity and it just sstuck. the little guy just needed a theme song I guess.
So there you have it,Darrylynn the Cramps fan. Has a nice ring to my ears.

Up until now,I've done my best to post stuff that I thought might be new to kids around here but yesterday being Sunday and all I thought it was as good a time as any to put some Slayer on the table.
Now I know that there isn't too many punks,or anyone else for that matter, that hasn't encountered this band on some level in their day.These guys have been around for a long time,sold millions of records and have been filling arenas on name alone for as long as most people can remember. The only problem is that they haven't put out a decent album in over 15 years. The last one that I could actually stand at all was Seasons in the Abyss and
that was weak sans Dead Skin Mask.
The thing is,there was a time when this band actually seemed dangerous,way back before the L.A.Raiders jersey and Sweat Pant wearin', Kerry King with a bald head and ugly goatee,Tom Araya needin' distortion on his vocals,Dave Lombardo not wanting anything to with these guys days. Before 1986, they just plain ruled.Their first two albums Show No Mercy and Hell Awaits along with the ep Haunting the Chapel are some of the best early '80's thrash there ever was. Whether it was their imagery or stories like Tom Araya pissing in Cronos from Venom's face,they just had an air about them that has been gone for what seems like forever.
So all you punks out there that have avoided this band like the plague because of misconceptions you may have developed,here is your chance to hear what you've been missing without spending a dime because if you like fast as fuck thrashy shit, there wasn't much better than this back then. In order of release:

and for all those that are still not convinced,here is Undisputed Attitude,their punk covers album.(and yes they do cover three,count 'em three,Minor Threat songs.

This is Aesop. He lives in San Francisco but grew up in Florida. He has played the part of drummer in a bunch of bands most notably The Fuck Boyz,Hickey,Ludicra,and most recently Agalloch. Why should you give a damn about this. Well,because Aesop is the creator of the best blog out there: Cosmic Hearse.
Beginning in November 2007,he has worked his ass off to bring his readers(riders) to places they had surely never heard. Rarely do I stop in and find something that isn't new to me.(I can think of maybe 5 or 6 times
since I started reading this past June). Posts range from obscure Japanese punk,lesser appreciated NWOBHM bands,great but criminally overlooked Doom,and lots more. Seeing the dedication he puts in day in and day out is one of the reasons I decided to start In Green Mountain Hell. There aren't too many people that post every day and that is definitely not lost on me.
Besides all this and raising a 7 year old, Aesop plays drums in the wonderful psychedelic metal band Ludicra. While all of their albums are favorites,I at first thought to post their first album Hollow Psalms so you could hear the progression that comes with each new album.I posted their 2nd Lp Another Great Love Song instead because you can already get Hollow Psalms at Cosmic Hearse here.
From the acoustic intro of The Only Cure,The Only Remedy to the fade at the end of Aging Ghost,this is song for song as good as anything I've heard in a long time. In addition to these 2 great records the have a third Lp named Fex Urbis Lex Orbis that is even better.You can order that from Alternative Tentacles so please do if you like the others.The vinyl is only a measly 9 dollars so support. Aesop was nice enough to let me post this one.
Also worth checking out are some of the members side projects. Guitarist John Cobbet's Hammer's of Misfortune features some of the most brilliant songwriting you'll here these days. As with the Ludicra albums,it is recommended that you check them out in chronological order. Bassist Ross Sewage has played in a bunch of Death Metal/Grindcore acts throughout his life and currently plays in Impaled and Ghoul. Last but not least,guitarist Christy Cather also plays in Beer Craft. Also check out her old outfit,Missile Command.
I almost forgot it after all that but alas my friends, here is Another Great Love Song.

Straight out of my retro-teenage punk rock fantasy into Green Mountain Hell and hopefully out of your speakers,here is the chainsaw swinging queen of many hearts,Wendy O' Williams. As is well known,Wendy was singer for the Plasmatics,actress(Reform School Girls,Candy goes to Hollywood,etc.)
animal rights activist,among other things left to your imagination.
Wendy supposedly got her start as a performer at age 6 tap dancing on the Howdy Doody show. a mere 20 or so years later,she met Rod Swenson aka Captain Kink and joined his newly conjured outfit The Plasmatics.

I could waste your time and mine rewriting a history of this band that has been told and retold over and over again 'til the point of banality, though I won't.

What I will explain is that,though I think everything with her name on it is worth checking out, there is absolutely nothing better than the rock opera Maggots The Record.

By far the finest written work of her career(whatever that means), this album just never gets old for me.Sure,Coup De 'Tat had the epic "The Damned" and W.O.W. had the heart wrenching ballad Opus in Cm7, neither of these records were solid all the way through like Maggots was.
Based 25 years in the future(in 1986) on an environmentally ravaged planet Earth,this is the origin of the Apocalypse according to Wendy. Giant mutant maggots multiplying by the second to devour us , a punishment for the enviromental abuse doled out by humankind for years upon years. No happy ending here,just complete imminent annihilation . Musically,this is by far the most thrash influenced of her efforts. Containing only original guitarist Wes Beech and a bunch of "Kip Winger" stunt double look alikes,this is a far cry from their late seventies/early eighties ouput.

In 1998,at the age of 48,Wendy O Williams journeyed into the woods near her home where she lived with partner Rod Swenson, accompanied with only her trusty 12 gauge shotgun and ended her life. This excerpt is from her suicide note:I don't believe that people should take their own lives without deep and thoughtful reflection over a considerable period of time. I do believe strongly, however, that the right to do so is one of the most fundamental rights that anyone in a free society should have. For me much of the world makes no sense, but my feelings about what I am doing ring loud and clear to an inner ear and a place where there is no self, only calm.

Honestly,the real reason for this post is that I have been looking for a reason to use this Black Flag hair cartoon forever. And since I have been a fan of Saint Vitus since I swiped a copy of their tape Hallow's Victim out of the bargain bin at NRM when I was 16 and there is a lot of great footage from this one show in Ontario,Canada back in 1984 , I am going to capitalize on someone else's hardwork and link you to these videos. They are from Scott Reager's first tenure with the band and the sound quality is shockingly excellent. Check out the intensity of Saint Vitus's guitarist Dave Chandler. He is one of my heroes. Also at this show were the mighty Black Flag and I rounded up all the videos from this show I could find. This is actually the best footage of Henry Rollins I can remember seeing.

I''ll tell you right off the bat that though I have been a fan of this great German band since my high school days,any real concrete history to do with them has eluded me still. I picked up a copy
from an old Rutland punk back around '96.
The albums name was Open Eyes,Open Ears,Brains to Think and Mouth to Speak. As great in my opinion as anything Minor Threat or any other now well known U.S.hardcore bands,this is one of those records that I really allowed to shape my being back then. I loved it that much.

So,without much at all to say about these guys,I present the Upright Citizens,who was by my standard the best German punk band of the '80's.

You all have heard of Bjork,whether it before her less than popular political views,her red carpet fashion exploits,or maybe even,though less likely,her eccentric songwriting. But before all this notoriety, she was the voice of the Icelandic treasure K.U.K.L.

K.U.K.L. ,Icelandic for witchcraft,was originally was conceived as a super group of various members of Icelandic bands like Tappi Tikarrass,Purrkur Pillnik,Spilafifl,and Medusa.I'm quite sure that none of those names mean a damn thing to you,but that is hardly the point here. They played their first show in Reykjavik,Iceland's capitol,opening for Crass on September,20th 1983. Shortly thereafter they released their debut,the 2 song ep Songull.

Around a year later, K.U.K.L. presented their first full length,the hypnotic Eye LP.
Released on Crass Records in 1984, the album named after the 1928 book "Story of the Eye" by George Bataille. The Eye was a far cry from anything that had come out on the label prior and bore a more experimental sound influenced by acts like Killing Joke and Einsturzende Neubauten,albeit with Bjork's instantly recognizable voice wailing and shrieking over top .Really, I challenge you to name a more distinct voice than this!!

After touring the rest of Europe extensively for the better part of the next 2 years,
K.U.K.L. returned in 1986's Holiday's in Europe.(The Naughty Nought)
Recorded by Penny Rimbaud and once again released on Crass Records, they gained the distinction of being the only band other than Crass to release a second record on the label.

This would be where the K.U.K.L. would end their legacy on. Bjork and a couple other members continued on in the much less riveting Sugarcubes before she went on to her much documented solo career which I won't touch on here.
With this said, I will leave you with this eulogy written by an unspecifies member of the group:

"The engine idea of KUKL was to cause a change in society through music using it as a means of transmission. To this end, the group refused to fall into commercialism and only used to appear during special occasions so that they could keep their quality of inspiration. KUKL’s members kept the stance that the power is within us and what we do. By listening to their music, people would become an integral part of that power transmission, even without wanting to.
Without holding out an accurate definition of their philosophy to avoid being type-cast, KUKL members considered that there is more in life than what is predetermined. They wanted to light other people’s minds avoiding restrictions since nowadays music served as a tool to numb people while those in the post of authority watched how we all go down to doom.

KUKL pointed out that we shouldn’t be satisfied with our own life’s style, our arts or attitudes. By having this in mind when music was concerned, KUKL introduced an incongruence in the psychic of their audience and as they did not use it to its own profit, individuals would have room enough to fill in with themselves. A non conformist attitude would bring another new wave of listeners. The option is being oneself."

No, The World weren't Pretty back in '78

Meet the one and only Wards!!!!! Formed in the summer of 1978 by Tea Curley and Beano Parker up in Burlington. Influenced by the Dead Boys among others,they recorded the songs for their first release "The World ain't Pretty and Neither are We" around 1981 but due to financial hangups,the record never saw the light of day 'til '83.This Ep has some great raw tuneless punk rock and overall all the songs are decent,though I must say,the opener "Weapons Factory" is far and away the best song this band ever wrote. Get this here.

In 1984, The Wards headed back to the studio to record their first full length. Recorded by Lou Giordano,who had already made a name for himself recording Boston legends SS Decontrol and The Proletariat, thay released this on tape taht same year. Titled, Ripped off in Boston, it got it's name for the sole reason being that their van was stolen from Kenmore square during the sessions. While I don't dig it quite as much as their first record, it still is a good listen in continuance. You can rip this off here.
In addition to these,they released another 7inch named "Don't Make U.S. Shoot the Pershing II. I have never heard it but there is testament speaking of a track called "Spray Children" that is considered by some to be their best song. Couldn't tell you but if you have this in digital format,get in touch so I can put it up here.
The Wards are still going strong and their next show that I know of is on November 15th at 8pm at the "Thrashin Fashion show at the VFW in Winooski,VT.

From Enslavement to Exaltation................

(There are many different versions of the beginnings of this band,this is just how i have come to understand it, so here goes nothing. ) Way back when, in the rainy ,industrial city of Birmingham,England,around 1983, three teenage lads by the names of Nik Bullen,Mick Harris,and last but not least Justin Broadrick were listening to a lot of Killing Joke,Crass, and early Amebix.
Clearly inspired by the fast-growing Anarchist Punk movement,these young men decided it was right time to get involved and start their own band. They released a few demos recorded at various rehearsal sessions and released them under various monikers such as Political Unrest ,Undead Hatred,and Civil Defence. In 1985,they released the excellent but very raw Hatred Surge tape under the now famous name Napalm Death.
Some of you probably know the Napalm Death of the mid to late nineties and 21st century that released a slew of mediocre and downright boring albums ad nauseum.
But back in '85,these guys were writing some of the most pissed,nihilistic,and discordant songs that had been heard at the time. On this tape,you can really here the origins of Justin Broadrick's guitar style that is better known on his abundance of later projects,most notably Godflesh and currently Jesu.

About a year later,they released the From Enslavement to Obliteration demo, not to be confused with their later landmark album of the same name. On this tape
you can begin to hear the grind influence gradually creeping it's way in. A lot of the songs on here are reworked versions of the Hatred Surge songs, with faster drums and more manic riffing.
I think of this as the missing link between their earlier more punk rock songs and the territory they were about to unleash on the world. Get the From Enslavement to Obliteration demo here.
This is where the whole lineup thing gets a little messy. In 1987, they released the mighty Scum LP. Regarded by many to be the definitive origin of the grindcore genre(this fact is also debated by just as many), the band had at this point left most of their punk rock leanings behind musically(not so much lyrically and thematically), to adopt a blazingly primitive brutal sound that still holds up great to my ears to this day. That says a lot,considering all the absolutely shitty,generic,and mostly horrible grind bands out there today. This LP features the original lineup only on the first side. The second side features Bill Steer(of Carcass fame)on guitar and Lee Dorian(Cathedral,Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine) on vocals.Like i said in the beginning, the chronology of membership in this band is quite messy but if you are interested,search here.

Napalm Death went on to put out some really good to excellent recordings such as the pummeling From Enslavement To Obliteration LP,the brutal Mentally Murdered Ep, a few splits with Electro Hippies, John Zorn and S.O.B.,and in my opinion their last good album,1992's Harmony Corruption.
These are all available on other blogs if you want to seek them out. I recommend that you do.I just decided to stick with the releases with J. Broadrick so I could fit the following album in.Life is Easy by Fall of Because(named for a Killing Joke song) is definitely one of my absolute favorite albums,period. Taking the dissonant guitar sound from the Napalm Death demos to it's next step before perfecting it during his days with the legendary Godflesh,this record just rules.

The first post for a local band!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We have Suburban Showdown from Dover,NH. They are a 3 piece and they play epic, galloping D-Beat that kind of reminds me of a cross of England's Hellkrusher and Montreal's Born Dead Icons. These are a couple of songs off their forthcoming split LP with Distress from the Soviet Union. They are "Another Tree,Another Dollar","Shows ruined by Thugs",and "Society" You can sample these songs here.

From Glasgow to Edinburgh

I wanna start this off with a thanks to Tino from Suburban Showdown for getting those songs to me so quickly.Everyone can expect some S.S. songs over the weekend.
Todays' post is a little bit bigger than I originally intended.I had settled on a Scotland theme and whittled that down to Disaffect and Oi Polloi. Then I thought,I really can't post Disaffect without adding some Sedition as well. So here we go now.
The Disaffect part here is easy. You get the discography which contains all the songs from the "Chained to Morality"LP among other things. This is fast as fuck. Don't miss out....Get It!!

As for Oi Polloi,their extensive track record would not allow me to give you all of it,so I whittled it down to my 3 favorite releases from 3 different eras. First is the "Fight Back" LP from 1994.
You can download that here.
This is Oi Polloi at their rawest and has classics like Boot Down the Door and You Cough they Profit. Next is the "Fuaim Cautha" LP from 1999. This is bit more melodic than Fight Back and you will find that some of the songs are a whole lot faster. That is here.
The final Oi Polloi release I will share with you today is the "Let the Boots Do the Talking" Ep.
This 7inch combines the rawness of Fight Back with some of the great riffing on Fuaim Cautha and although it is fairly short with only five songs, it's my favorite of the three.

Lastly, I offer Glasgow's Sedition. This is their "Earthbeat "LP. Much like Disaffect but with
more of a tribal/pagan feel with great sound clips at the beginning of the songs. That is here.
Members of Disaffect and Sedition later went on to form Scatha.
The last thing I would like to share with you is the website for Flat Earth Records.
They are no longer a label but still exist as a distribution. All of the bands you have found on this post have releases on the label and they carry stuff by acts such as:Doom,Ebola,Witchknot,Los Crudos,Voorhees,Umlaut,Spazm 151,Headache,etc.
They also have tons of Mp3's that you can sample from most of their out of print releases. Believe me when I say that these guys released some of the best crust/hardcore/punk that the world will ever have seen. Please visit their page when you get a free second. On Tuesday,October 14th,Central Vermont Peace and Justice will be showing the new Michael Moore movie. It will be at the Unitarian Church on West St. in Rutland. It is free but donations are welcome as always. Come and check it out if you have nothing better to do. It is always nice when the crowd at these things doesn't look like the Bingo club at a fucking Nursing home. I would also like to take time to thank everyone that showed up at the park show on September 27th. It was a blast. Here is my initial offering to you. The United Kingdom's EBOLA. Ebola was a later incarnation of a bunch of Bradford U.K. bands,Generic and One By One to name a couple of them,both of them great in their own right.Anyway, I post this in particular to please both the Punks and Hessians alike. This particular release is called the Imprecation EP. It has nine songs, all of them short and sweet. Hello Everybody, welcome to In Green Mountain Hell. For those of you who don't know me,my name is Troy. This is my attempt at developing a sort of database and conduit for D.I.Y. musicians and other folks in Vermont and the immediate surrounding area. I will be posting music,show listings,writings,movies and other updates for everyone who would like to read this regularly. I find this a bit more convenient than working with paper zines,for one because I won't see you all very often for obvious geographical reasons and also, let's face it,alot of you spend too much time online anyway. So, i will contact as many people as possible and will flyer and such to spread the word around and get people checking this thing. Anything goes really, send me show updates,record release updates,website URL's,etc. If you are hitchhiking and need a ride,send me an email and I will post your info. Car trouble....you get the idea I hope. I will do my best to moderate and with your help, let us make this a great resource for us all. On top of all this, I will be posting music from non local artists as well,so check these bands out as well........
